New South Wales has a competitive energy market. Customers have over 20 energy suppliers to choose from.

According to Canstar Blue research, you can save hundreds of dollars by switching from a standard contract to a market contract – so check with the supplier what contract you might be inheriting when you move into your new place.

When shopping around for a supplier and a plan, compare the supply charges and the usage charges. Supply charges should remain the same in each bill. Usage charges vary depending on the amount of energy you consume.

When choosing a supplier, consider the type of contract and plan on offer and what the supply and usage charges are. These are likely to vary.

From 2017, customers can select from standard contracts, ongoing contracts with no exit fees, and market contracts. Market contracts are set by the supplier. These contracts are set for a specific period, prices can change at any time, however suppliers can offer discounts which may make them worthwhile.

There are types of contracts: a standard and a market contract. Electricity suppliers must offer a standard contract along side a market contract. A standard contract, also known as a standard offer, are ongoing and have no exit fees.

Market contracts are set by the retailer and their terms and incentives can vary.
