Employers Can Now Sponsor Child Care Workers from Overseas

Good news for child care sector managers. If you’re struggling to find qualified child care workers locally, you can now sponsor overseas workers under the Skills in Demand 482 Visa.

Child Care Workers Added to the Skilled Occupation List

Child care workers are now on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL), which means they are eligible for employer-sponsored visas. The SOL identifies occupations experiencing worker shortages, allowing businesses to recruit skilled workers from overseas when they cannot fill roles with local talent.

Sponsoring Child Care Workers Under the Skills in Demand 482 Visa

The Skills In Demand Subclass 482 Visa is designed for employers experiencing skills shortages locally. The 482 visa allows employers to sponsor skilled worker from overseas to fill vacancies. Child care workers can now be sponsored for a 482 visa, provided they meet the required skills and qualifications.

What Are the Requirements for Child Care Workers?

To qualify for sponsorship, candidates should be qualified with training equivalent to:

  • An AQF Certificate II or III in child care (or an equivalent NZ qualification) OR
  • At least one year of relevant experience (in some cases, on-the-job training may also be required)

Some roles may also require registration or licensing depending on the state or territory.

Child care employers will need to show sponsored child care employees will be responsible for:

– Preparing materials and activities for children’s learning and play
– Managing children’s behaviour and guiding their social development
– Supervising hygiene and daily routines
– Reading stories, playing games, and conducting recreational activities

Where can sponsored child care workers work?

Sponsored child care workers can be providing care and supervision in child care centres, hospitals, and educational centres; in the worker’s own home under government/community schemes, caring for school-age children in before/after-school programs or assisting parents with child care in the family’s home.

With the growing demand for qualified child care workers in Australia, employer sponsorship provides an excellent opportunity for child care centres to address staff shortages and maintain high-quality care.
