Temporary Graduate (subclass 485 visa)

 The Temporary Graduate (subclass 485 visa) enables graduates who have completed their studies in Australia to live and work in Australia temporarily after they have finished their studies.

The 485 visa has two streams:

Post-Study work stream – The 485 visa Post-Study work stream enables you to stay in Australia for between 2 to 4 years after you have finished your studies. This will depend on the level of your Australian study qualification:

    • bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years
    • masters by coursework: 2 years
    • masters by research: 3 years
    • doctoral degree: 4 years

This stream is only available to students who applied for and were granted their first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. .

Graduate work stream – The 485 visa Graduate work stream enables the you to work in Australian for up to 18 months.

This stream is for international students who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

To be eligible for the 485 graduate visa, you will need to:

hold a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now have a Bridging Visa A or Bridging Visa B, granted on the basis of a valid application for a visa

or

a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now hold a substantive visa

have completed your studies in Australia while on a qualifying student visa

be in Australia when you apply for the 485 visa

be under 50 years old

apply for the visa within 6 months of obtaining a recognized qualification

meet the required English language requirements. This is the equivalent to an IELTS score of 6. (The English language requirement does not apply if the candidate holds a passport issued by the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada or the United States or if the nominee has had 5 or more years of secondary of tertiary education conducted in English)

meet the required health and character requirements.
